Who are The Centre for Mental Health Research?

The Centre for Mental Health Research take the lead in challenging policies, systems and society, by building research evidence to create fairer mental health policy, so that everyone can have better mental health.

Poverty, injustice and discrimination put some people at a much higher risk of receiving the right mental health support, and therefore can lead to poorer mental health.

What do The Centre for Mental Health Do?

By developing mental health research, economic analysis and policy ideas, the Centre for Mental Health Research equips services and decision makers to meet people’s needs and reduce mental health inequalities. Its aims are to:

  • promote equity
  • champion the voices of people experiencing mental health difficulties and inequality
  • call out and tackle inequalities in mental health
  • work with others with respect and openness
  • build broad relationships
  • translate values into action
  • build and communicate evidence for change.

In a recent review (2024) by the Centre for Mental Health Research, it was found that the majority of the costs stemming from mental ill health fall on people living with mental health difficulties and their families. The costs include lost or lower earnings for people living with mental health difficulties, employment or business losses due to poor mental health at work, and the costs of informal care.

The Collaboration between UK Debt Service and the Centre for Mental Health Research

We understand the intrinsic link between problem debt and high risks of poor mental health. Poor mental well-being can hinder the ability to make sound financial judgements, leading to overspending, neglecting bill payments, or relying on high interest borrowing options that exacerbate debt burden. Aligned with the views and objectives of the Centre for Mental Health Research, we have published relevant findings and resources on How to Cope with Financial Anxiety, which offers practical advice, support and ‘mindset coping mechanisms’.

UK Debt Service is working in collaboration with the Centre for Mental Health Research to undergo new projects and to develop key briefings to support people who are affected by problem debt and have a significant risk of mental health issues. Our partnership aims to facilitate our mental health campaigns, values and publications, as well as supporting us with new ways of working, to improve outcomes for our customers and to embed high quality research into our practice.

Over the coming months, we are working together to outline and conduct research to:

  • explore and understand societal and individual needs regarding money and mental health and how to meet them effectively
  • review health inequalities within the financial debt support sector
  • establish the evidence base for effective support and tools for people with mental health and debt problems
  • make actionable recommendations to financial related organisations, regulators and policy makers
